What do you think about the "Rosemary's Baby"?

It was a very creepy book!

What do you think about the "Rosemary's Baby"?
It's rather long and the first time I saw it, it scared the hell out of me.
Reply:For it's time it was a cool film.....we all loved it at the time....now it's a classic !!!!!!!!
Reply:It was very LONG...but not a BAD movie. it wasn't good either tho =/ too long for what it was
Reply:I found it disconcerting--just the whole story was pretty messed up. I mean, tricking your wife into having the devil's baby?? That's just...yeah, weird.
Reply:The baby grew up, married your mom and created you. That's the rumor.
Reply:Interesting film..
Reply:Was a great movie for its time.
Reply:Great movie, really poor ending.
Reply:its gross!! plain and simple.

The rosemary plant in my kitchen has developed a white powdery residue on the leaves and stems. What is that?

It could actually be aphids. woolly aphids look like "white stuff" on a plant. Look close, and blow on it - does anything move? If so, the best thing to to is remove them. squish the little buggers, and wash the plant.

If the residue is powery and very thin, it could be powery mildew. In which case, it's harder to treat. It's especially hard to control indoors. And once it appears, you can't fix it - only prevent its spread. Remove the affected parts, if it's only a little bit, and try to improve the conditions. Good air circulation is important - difficult to acheive indoors. You can also spray the plant with 1/2milk-1/2 water in a spray bottle. It will change the ph on the surface of the plant to a level that powery mildew doesn't like.

Again, most treatments (if it's powdery mildew) are preventative - not cures. But it shouldn't kill your plant outright.

When it gets warm, plant it outside and cut it back, and it should spring back just fine.

The rosemary plant in my kitchen has developed a white powdery residue on the leaves and stems. What is that?
Powdery mildew, aphids or mealy bugs.

Being an indoor palnt I'll asume it is still small? Stuff paper or foil in balls around the stem of your plant, to hold the soil in the pot. Then fill sink with warm dish soapy water and swish plant back and forth - gently rubbing areas that are affected. Be sure the plant dries - daub with paper towels - to prevent more mold or mildew.

BTW: Never spray milk on your plants as it clogs up the "pores" and can cause a bad case of mold or mildew.
Reply:strange, and I have actually proven that the milk sprayed on the powery mildrew actually kills the fungus..and is a good thing..
Reply:Most likely it is powdery mildew. I have had some luck with milk also, but your best bet is to remove it from the house or it will spread. Prevent this in the future by making sure you wash the pot you are planting in with warm soapy water and spray with a disinfectant like lysol prior to planting. Also make sure you are not overwatering. Too much moisture (like on a ledge over the kitchen sink) will set your plant up for this.

How do you dry herbs? I have oregano, basil, sage, lavender, rosemary and mint!?

Love using them first time container growing them on my veranda!

How do you dry herbs? I have oregano, basil, sage, lavender, rosemary and mint!?
Drying Herbs

Storing herbs in dried form is very popular because it is such a simple way to preserve them. Dried herbs can be used straight from their jars just as they are needed for cooking or as a garnish just as fresh herbs are; however, the just-picked herb aroma is lost in the drying process. Marjoram, mint, oregano, rosemary, and thyme dry well. Some people may prefer to freeze herbs such as basil, chervil, chives, cilantro (large flat-leafed and parsley-like), dill, and parsley because drying them may be disappointing. See Freezing Fresh Herbs chart linked at the top of this page.

Harvesting and drying

Herb leaves should be cut when the plant’s stock of essential oils is at its highest.

In the leafy herbs (basil, chervil, marjoram, and savory) this occurs just before blossoming time.

Basil, lemon balm, parsley, rosemary, and sage can be cut as many as 4 times during the outdoor growing season.

Cutting should be done in the morning of a day that promises to be hot and dry. As soon as the dew is off the plants, snip off the top 6 inches of stem below the flower buds.

Bunch drying

Bunch drying is an easy way to dry long-stemmed herbs, such as marjoram, sage, savory, mint, parsley, basil, dill, and rosemary.

If the leaves are clean, it is not necessary to wash them; some of the oils may be lost during rinsing. However, if the leaves are dusty, or have been thickly mulched, rinse them briefly under cold water. Shake off any excess water and hang the herbs, tied in small bunches, just until the water evaporates away. Discard any dead or yellowed leaves.

As soon as possible, take the herb bunches in and hang them in a warm, dry place which is well ventilated and not exposed to direct sunlight. (Traditionally, herbs were hung above kitchen fireplace mantels or in attics.)

Tie herbs and hang – leafy ends down – so that the essential oils in the stems will flow into the leaves. Do not hang the herbs above the stove you cook on; grease and odors can damage the delicate texture, flavor, and aroma of the herbs.

To prevent dust from collecting on the drying leaves, place each bunch inside a paper bag before hanging. Gather the top of the bag and tie the herb stems so the leaves hang freely inside the bag. For ventilation, cut out the bottom of the bag or punch air holes in the sides.

There are other ways to dry herbs:

food dehydrator,

tray drying, or

microwave-oven drying.

Tray Drying

Tray drying works well for seeds and large-leafed herbs. It is the best choice for herbs with short stems that are difficult to tie together for hanging. Dry the herbs on a shallow-rimmed tray covered with cheesecloth.

To dry leaves:

Remove leaves from their stems or leave them attached.

Spread only one layer of leaves on a tray to ensure good air circulation and quick drying.

Place the tray in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area that is not exposed to direct sunlight.

Every few days, stir or turn the leaves gently to assure even drying. Depending on the temperature and humidity, it takes approximately a week or so for herbs to dry completely.

When the leaves are crisp and thoroughly dry, remove them from the trays and store in an airtight container.

To dry seeds:

Spread seeds on trays in a thin layer.

Dry as for leaves. Once dry, carefully hand rub the seed capsules and gently blow away chaff. Store in an airtight container.

Microwave Oven Drying

Microwave ovens can dry herbs quickly. However, extreme caution should be used when microwave drying because of the risk of not only scorching the herbs but also starting a fire and damaging the microwave.

If herbs need to be rinsed, make sure all the excess water is removed; otherwise, they will cook, not dry in the microwave.

Place no more than 4 or 5 herb branches in the microwave, arranging them between 2 paper towels.

Microwave on HIGH for 2 to 3 minutes; remove herbs from oven.

If herbs are not brittle and dry, microwave on HIGH for another 30 seconds.

Place herbs on a rack and let cool.

Store in an airtight container.
Reply:I usually gather a bunch together and tie them at the bottom, hanging them upside down in a dry place.
Reply:the best way I've found is to gather them with a piece of string and hang them upside down somewhere out of direct sunlight....also....you should pick them for drying very early in the morning, as this is when they have the peak amount of their oils for flavor.(by early I mean close to sunrise).
Reply:Just tie the stalks together with thread or light string them hang them upside down to dry. I just have them hanging in my pantry. Use a mortar and pestle to grind up. lots better than store bought.
Reply:Are they fresh? Just put them in the oven for 5-7 minutes. VOILA!
Reply:There are several ways to dry them. If you have a porch that has good breezes going through it, a shady overhang and is not in the direct sunlight, you can hang the herbs in bunches and dry them there.

Or you can use a dehydrator, on a very low setting.

Some people dry them in the oven, at a very low setting. Turn it to 'warm' and leave them overnight.

When you are cutting your herbs, cut them in the morning. If you wait until the afternoon, some of the voilatile oils will have evaporated, so the flavour is better if you cut them in the morning, before it starts to get warm out.
Reply:the way we used to dry herbs is by taking the batch of herbs and tie the ends together with string and hang them upside down in a cool place or best off by a fan. Hope this helps. good luck.
Reply:You can tie the fresh herb up with string or thread, and hang suspended in your kitchen from a hook or nail. Will dry in about 3 days.
Reply:I tie string around them and hang the upside down in a dry place.

My wife had an anovular cycle for 13 days. Will rosemary tea help her ovulate?

My wife and I are trying to have a baby. We tried the ovulation predictor, and it seems that she is not ovulating. She was on Depo-Provera for maybe two years, and it seemed to mess up her cycle. Will rosemary tea help her begin ovulating again? She heard from a friend that it would. Any ideas?

My wife had an anovular cycle for 13 days. Will rosemary tea help her ovulate?
Just because she is not getting a positive OPK does not mean that she is not ovulating. Deop does tend to stay in the system for a long time though, so if she hasn't been off of it very long she probably is not ovulating yet. How long has she been off of it? I've heard that it often takes up to 18 months for women to resume ovulation. She should try charting her cycle so she can learn more about if she is ovulating and if so, when she is fertile. See the linked website for how to chart her cycle. I'm not sure about the tea, but all I can say is try it and see. It couldn't hurt.

Anyone ever used dried Rosemary leaves and Olive Oil solution on hair?

I read somewhere that combining 1/2 cup of dried Rosemary leaves %26amp; 1/2 cup of Olive Oil, then warming it up, apply it to hair, then wrap hair with saran wrap, then wrap a hot, wet towel around head for 15 minutes, is a good treatment for your hair.

How do I spread rosemary oil into a bedroom's air?

The best way is to buy an atomizer. I like the ones from Amrita Aromatherapy or Aura Cacia.

You can also just add a few drops of the oil into a little spray bottle filled with plain water and spritz that around the room.

Or you could get use just about any kind of potpourri warmer. I don't care so much for the light-bulb rings (they get too hot and mutate your oil) but those little crock-pot types aren't so bad as long as you empty them out every day. (The heat will eventually cause your oils to degrade.)

Is the middle name Rosemary too much to follow a simple name like Ava?

I don't think so - I also like Ava Rose; however, if you are thinking Rosemary to be named after somebody - go for it! And it's not too much if you've got a shortish surname but having said that, if you are mainly going to refer to her as Ava, then it should not matter how long her middle name is.

Is the middle name Rosemary too much to follow a simple name like Ava?
Not at all. In fact, if you have a very short first name like Ava, I think it's best to have a longer middle name (like Rosemary!). :o) My girls have longer first names, so they have short middle names. It is not good to have first and middle names with equal lengths/syllables, so I think Ava Rosemary is perfect! Hope that helps! Take care!
Reply:Rosemary is one of my favorite names!

And with a simple - and popular - given name like Ava, it would be a mistake to go with Ava Grace or Ava Rose - there will be countless girls with that exact same name.

Ava Rosemary gives her a little bit of spark.
Reply:No, it isn't. A name like Monique Roaemary may be too much. One simple name with a name is usually best. You also wouldn't use like, Andrea Rosemary ... tooo many syllables in both names.
Reply:Ava is a short name, while Rosemary is a long one, thus when you read it like this: "Ava Rosemary" the length of both names totally complement each other. :) It sounds very pretty!
Reply:Quite the opposite! A longer classic like Rosemary is the *perfect* compliment to short, sweet Ava. Just a really nice balance. Lovely. ;)
Reply:No way! With short names like Ava and Mia (my daughters name) longer middle names sound better. Especilly three sylables.

My daughter is Mia Cassidy.

Its definately not too much. I like following a simple name with a longer name and vice versa.
Reply:I agree with Ava Rose but having a short name followed by a long one is nice so either one is beautiful.
Reply:No at all. It's unexpected ( in a good way) and flows really well. Ava Rosemary is stunning.
Reply:no that works well i think Rosemary would be to much to follow a longer name but Ava is simple so it works beautifully!

Can i grow rosemary from a cutting?whats the best way to do this?

The answers involving a rooting medium are pretty accurate. However, upright rosemary is hard to root even under the best conditions. Prostrate rosemary is more forgiving. In either case, take several cuttings and hope that at least one will "take." Mist frequently as well as keeping the soil moist but not soggy.

Can i grow rosemary from a cutting?whats the best way to do this?
yes you can. rosemary is a slow grower but very hardy when established. very simplycut off a stem and put it in a pot....water and feed and you should be ok... i've been growing herbs for years and have done this many times. just dont put it in a too bigger pot....
Reply:Cut off a stem and dip it in rootone and plant it in a growing medium. It is a slow grower so be patient.
Reply:yes you can. I've done it a few times and I'm no gardener, I kill most plants. I think may have just taken a few largeish cuttings and stuck them in the ground - nothing cleverer than that! When I say "cutting" I mean I walked up to the plant with scissors, knowing nothing about "three centimetres north of the third bud" or whatever. Maybe I watered them once in the ground. Not all will take, but you only need one to get a nice bush. As it were.
Reply:its best to grow herbs in a strawberry pot, each hole can be a different herb, its best really to grow herbs from seeds and make sure you feed them well.
Reply:nah you need to have sex
Reply:yes, but really not worth the hassle you can pick them up for 50p
Reply:Just cut a piece off, dip it in rooting compound, then plant it. To be honest its easier to just buy a new plant from the garden centre, although not as much of a challenge I suppose. Good luck!
Reply:As rosemary makes a sizeable shrub, a strawberry pot really isn't ideal. I have it as a hedge in my garden in the North East of England with plants I grew from seed. You can grow it from cuttings - choose a fresh sprig, pull the leaves off the bottom for about a couple of inches, dip into hormone rooting powder and insert near the rim of a plantpot filled with gritty compost. You can put several sprigs in the same pot. Keep the compost moist and the sprigs should root within a couple of weeks, then you can transplant them.
Reply:If you have a mature rosemary plant (and unless it's a small creeping variety, would not fit, or be happy, in a strawberry pot),

then there's a really easy way to make a new plant.

It's called "layering".

You take a branch that's long enough to touch it's middle to the soil. Nick the side of the bark that will be touching the soil - but don't cut all the way through. Tack it down into the soil and water well.

This way, the parent plant can keep the "cutting" alive while it roots. After roots form, you can cut the link between baby and parent, and repot the new plant.

Growing a rosemary lawn?

I have a very small lawn and would like to grow a lawn that does not need mowing as I cannot afford to get them mowed. Area is 6 by 10 meters. Any ideas on how I can do this?

Growing a rosemary lawn?
Try thyme. It spreads like crazy, smells great when you step on it, spices up your food, and stays close to the ground.

Rosemary gets too tall and it is like stepping on cactus when you walk there.
Reply:Actually, your idea is very common, and a legitimate question. You have quite a few options!

If you want it so that you can walk on it and not get hurt or hurt your plants, these are a few options:

1) Tall grasses-go to your local nursery and look around, usually they come in many verieties, and you only have to mow it about 3 to 4 times a year, and it can be done with long loppers!

2) Thyme- smells great when you step on it, never needs fertilization because it is an herb and you can use it in any of your favorite foods!

3) moss or ground covers-these need lots of water and shade, but never need to be mowed. great option if you have a tree in your front lawn. the only maintenance is watering and in fall when the leaves drop, you put mesh screens or something over it to collect the leaves.

If you want it so it looks good, low maintenance, but you cannot walk on it, here are some more options:

1) Rosebush garden. all it requires is watering and occasional pruning. looks nice.

2) Rosemary garden. doesn't need fertilizers, all it needs is water. when you prune it you can take your clippings and dry them or use them raw in your food!

3) Ground covers-flower ground covers such as Sweet Woodruff or english ivy

4) Lavender! needs lots of water for first few months of planting. later you rarely need to water it, attracts some bees sometimes and it looks and smells great!

Hope i helped :D
Reply:There are many plants that are low growing and still "stepable". As a matter of fact I saw plants at my local Pikes Nursery that had "stepables" as part of the tag. Some are flowering, some are not. Some bear fruit like small berries, etc. I think this is the vendor I saw, http://www.stepables.com/

You would first need to scrape off any grass with a shovel that is there currently. On my previous small lawn I planted ornamental grass like feather grass in the back and blue fescue in front if it and wintergreen infront of that. Wintergreen has edible berries in the fall/winter. But you could also once you take the grass off you could put down compost and plant a few strawberry plants. They only get about 8 inches high and spread like crazy.

Emmenagogues are herbs which stimulate blood flow in the pelvic area and uterus, some stimulate menstruation. Women have used plants such as mugwort, parsley and ginger to prevent or terminate early pregnancy (see Abortifacient). Others use emmenagogues to stimulate menstrual flow when menstruation is absent for reasons other than pregnancy, such as hormonal disorders or conditions like oligomenorrhea (infrequent or light menses).

Tenderly :: Rosemary Clooney

This ole house once knew his children

This ole house once knew his wife

This ole house was home and comfort

As they fought the storms of life

This old house once rang with laughter

This old house heard many shouts

Now he trembles in the darkness

When the lightnin' walks about

CHORUS:

Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer

Ain't a-gonna need this house no more

Ain't got time to fix the shingles

Ain't got time to fix the floor

Ain't got time to oil the hinges

Nor to mend the windowpane

Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer

He's a-gettin' ready to meet the saints

This ole house is a-gettin' shaky

This ole house is a-gettin' old

This ole house lets in the rain

This ole house lets in the cold

On his knees I'm gettin' chilly

But he feel no fear nor pain

'Cause he see an angel peekin'

Through a broken windowpane

CHORUS

This ole house is afraid of thunder

This ole house is afraid of storms

This ole house just groans and trembles

When the night wind flings its arms

This ole house is gettin' feeble

This old house is needin' paint

Just like him it's tuckered out

But he's a-gettin' ready to meet the saints

CHORUS

This ole house dog lies a-sleepin'

He don't know I'm gonna leave

Else he'd wake up by the fireplace

And he'd sit there and howl and grieve

But my huntin' days are over

Ain't gonna hunt the coon no more

Gabriel done brought in my chariot

When the wind blew down the door

CHORUS

How do you measure dried and fresh rosemary for a recipe? Can they be used interchageably?

You can't use dry and fresh herbs interchangeably. A good rule of thumb is that you should use 1/3 less of the dried herb than you would of the fresh. So, if a recipe calls for 1 Tablespoon of fresh rosemary, you'd substitute 1 teaspoon of dry.

As for how to measure, I'd recommend a good set of stainless steel measuring spoons. I love the ones with rectangular bowls, because they fit into spice jars for easier measuring. You can see an example here:

How do you measure dried and fresh rosemary for a recipe? Can they be used interchageably?
man...if at all possible use fresh herbs!!!!

when it comes to dryed herbs, you have no idea how long they have been sitting in the can/bottle...whatever.

trust me, there is a huge taste difference in dryed and fresh...but, if you must use dryed herbs always put some in the palm of your hand and rub it just before you put it in anything. doing that releases the oils and flavors inside.
Reply:I think fresh is better, but I can't always have some as I don't have a garden... So I often use dry rosemary

about the quantity I put in a recipe, it's how I feel it. I mean, I put some rosemay, I taste, and then I decide if I put more or no.
Reply:The dried has a more intense flavor, use less.

Fresh is very good and you can use more of it in your recipe.

Why rosemary is always the preferred herb for lamb?

It depends where you are getting your recipes from. Rosemary works very well with lamb, however mint is also used.

Many put a mint sauce over lamb dishes.

Why rosemary is always the preferred herb for lamb?
actually a combination of mint and rosemary is what is traditionally used. lamb is a flavorful fatty meat...these herbs lend the perfect balance..as they are profound in their own sense. a well balanced combination.
Reply:Rosemary really compliments the natural flavor of lamb meat. that's why it is the preffered herb. Mint is mostly for mutton, and that's to help cover the strong taste. Mutton is the meat of a sheep that is at least 2 years of age.
Reply:It isn't.!

I would say more sheep eating peoples would prefer it curried or with mint sauce.

For stuffing, what really tastes better? Sage? Thyme & Rosemary? Or just Poultry seasoning?

Sometimes i hear people saying that sage is too strong or not good, then some people say they replace the sage with thyme %26amp; rosemary. Others just skip the whole thing and go with poultry seasoning?

What am i to do? Ive never made stuffing. What is really the best basic stuffing seasoning?

Thanks!

For stuffing, what really tastes better? Sage? Thyme %26amp; Rosemary? Or just Poultry seasoning?
I like sage in pork stuffing.

I prefer thyme and rosemary for chicken myself.

Poultry seasoning is okay, but it has sage in it.

I buy pepperidge farm herb stuffing mix, and add onions and celery. I don't add any other flavors...it's already done.
Reply:Go with sage, rosemary and thyme you can't beat the taste. If you are not sure about the quantities of each make a batch using the minimum you think would work then take a spoonful or so and microwave it to cook it then taste the product and adjust as needed.
Reply:The easiest would be to use poultry seasoning, but I too like fresh herbs and use them. Remember that any dried herb is stronger than fresh . Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving
Reply:Poultry seasoning tastes the best.

This stuffs a 20-25 pound turkey with some left over to cook in the pan or seperately:

6 large loaves of cheap white sandwich bread

6 large eggs or larger

3 sticks of butter

3-4 medium onions - finely chopped

1 stalk/bunch of celery - finely chopped

1 large jar of poultry seasoning - or to taste

salt and pepper to taste

About 1-2 cups boiling water or chicken broth - amount may vary depending on how dry the bread is.

Into a large container like the bottom of the turkey roasting pan or a large Rubber Maid storage bin - something with a lid - tear the bread into small pieces. Mix in egge, oinions, celery, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Slice butter over mixture and mix in. Pour boiling water over bread until moist and cover with a clean towel and the container's lid. Let set 5 minutes. Mix. Add more or less liquid if you want a moister or drier dressing. Stuff bird. Cook any remaining dressing in the pan with the bird adding during the last 45 minutes of cooking.
Reply:I use both and they both turn out great.

excellent results
Reply:I've always used sage for my stuffing. I use one loaf of bread and just measure the sage by hand. If you're concerned about using too much, just start off with a little less than what your recipe calls for because you can always add more if necessary.
Reply:Poultry seasoning... and yes, people overdo the sage. It is too strong and overpowers the other spices, so I never use it. Too many people don't like the taste anyway. Rosemary is wonderful..but can also overpower.
Reply:I have been preparing dressing for 40 years now. Don't be afraid to make sage dressing. It is wonderful. The first time you make it follow the cookbook. Once you get the taste you can add more or less. For the best dressing and turkey information along with my bottle of famous seasoning send your request to Steveburgess3720@yahoo.com.
Reply:I use sage and thyme only and in moderation. As much as I like rosemary, I use it mostly with chicken or pork roasting. I also make a broth with a bay leaf for the stuffing.
Reply:I actually use all three. I wouldn't use poultry seasoning. I like fresh herbs.
Reply:I personally use poultry seasoning.

What many people seem to have overlooked is the fact that poultry seasoning is actually a combination of all three of these herbs along with marjoram, salt, and sometimes other spices. By using poultry seasoning, you're actually getting all of the herbs that you listed anyway.

I have a very nice rosemary plant and it needs cutting back a bit to make the plant fill out a bit.?

Does anybody know if you can freeze the cuttings or do you dry them out and place into bottles. What is the best system if you can save some.

I have a very nice rosemary plant and it needs cutting back a bit to make the plant fill out a bit.?
I have always dried them.

You can tie them in bunches and hang them upset down some where dark and dry or you can lay them on a baking tray and place them in a very low temp oven for about 2 hours until they dry, then put them in air tight jars.
Reply:You could just air dry them. I see no reason why you couldn't freeze them for cooking later. Just the little needles are the parts that i use. I like them on fish and chicken.
Reply:If you are wanting to use them for cooking or in teas, you would need to dry them out. After they are all dried out, then you can place them in your containers.
Reply:Dry them. Also you can keep a couple sprigs in a glass with some water. Rosemary grows back quick. Try red potatoes with some olive oil and shallots. Add some rosemary two or three springs Bake in the oven at 400 F and you have a fine side dish!

Where can I buy a rosemary plant in singapore?

almost anywhere.

Cheap ones can be found at World Farm (Bah Soon Pah Road).

For convenience, you could go to convenience nurseries such as Far East Flora at Thomson Road. The plants should be at the "herbs" section. Calling before make the trip is advisable.

1 tsp. dried rosemary

Salt and pepper

1 tbsp. olive oil

3 lb. chicken, cut into serving pieces

Crush rosemary between fingers and combine with lemon juice, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Stir in oil. Add chicken and turn to coat. Arrange chicken on a rack in a broiler pan. Broil until browned and cooked through, 10 to 15 minutes per side. If chicken browns too quickly, lower oven rack and continue cooking until done.

Does anyone have a rescipe for lemon rosemary chicken?
I rub a whole fryer chicken with EVOO and minced garlic. Then I stuff fresh rosemary and some lemon wedges in the cavity. Then I bake it at 400 until the juices run clear when pierced with a knife, about 1 hour 20 minutes (for a large bird).
Reply:Roasted Chicken with Rosemary and Garlic Herbed Potatoes

Prep: 30 minutes

Marinate: 6 hours

Roast: 1-1/4 hours

1/2 cup kosher salt

1/4 cup snipped fresh rosemary

2 3-1/2 to 3-3/4-lb. whole broiler-fryer chickens

8 sprigs fresh rosemary

1 small lemon

1/3 cup olive oil

4 cloves garlic, crushed

2 lb. red, white, or gold new potatoes

1/4 tsp. kosher salt or 1/8 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. ground black pepper

Fresh rosemary leaves (optional)

Lemon peel strips (optional)

Directions

1. For brine, in large Dutch oven stir together 1 gallon water, 1/2 cup salt, and 1/4 cup snipped rosemary until salt is dissolved. Rinse inside of chickens. Submerge chickens in brine. Tie 6 of the rosemary sprigs together with 100-percent cotton kitchen string to make a brush. Add rosemary brush to brine mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 6 to 8 hours.

2. Using a vegetable peeler or zester, remove lemon peel, taking care not to remove any white pith. Cut lemon in half; set aside.

3. In a small saucepan combine olive oil, 2 garlic cloves, and lemon peel. Cook, uncovered, over low heat just until warm to the touch; remove from heat and set aside.

4. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Remove chickens and rosemary sprigs from brine. Dry chickens with paper towels. Skewer neck skin of chickens to backs. Twist wing tips under backs. In the cavity of each chicken place a lemon half, a sprig of the remaining rosemary, and one garlic clove. Tie legs to tail, if present, or to each other. Cut large potatoes into 1/2-inch slices and halve small potatoes. Place potatoes in a large shallow roasting pan. Sprinkle potatoes with the 14 teaspoon salt and the pepper. Using the rosemary sprig brush, baste potatoes with some of the oil mixture. Place chickens, breast sides up, on potatoes in pan. Using the rosemary sprig brush, baste chickens with some of the oil mixture.

5. Roast, uncovered, 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 degrees F. Roast for 45 to 60 minutes more or until drumsticks move easily in sockets, chicken is no longer pink (180 degrees F), and potatoes are tender, brushing twice with remaining oil mixture during first 1 hour of roasting. Remove from oven. Cover; let stand 10 minutes before carving.

6. Transfer the chickens to a serving dish; surround with potatoes. Sprinkle chickens and potatoes with fresh rosemary leaves and lemon peel strips. Makes 8 servings.

What can u use to lighten ur hair. Iv'e heard of lemon juice & rosemary tea?

i have dark brown hair. what can I use to lighten it up just a little bit. I heard lemon juice works but only for blonds and that rosemary tea for brunettes? Is this true? any suggestions?

What can u use to lighten ur hair. Iv'e heard of lemon juice %26amp; rosemary tea?
SunIn, you can get it from Sally's. Or just be out in the sun should lighten it a litte.
Reply:Hi, I am a licensed hair stylist, and unfortunately - it will be VERY difficult for you to lighten your hair without professional help. Dark brown hair would lighten if you used the products you mentioned, or similar ones - including highlighting kits from the drugstore... however it would only lighten into a red stage. Natural products are not intended for lightening hair, and trust me --- 99% of the time you get odd results that are very hard (or even impossible) to fix. All hair lightens in phases, and dark hair has trouble lifting out of the red stage. When I say red stage... it's more orangey and brassy. The only way to get it out after that would be to dye over it.

You can go to a salon and get professional highlights, and they can use a high-lift color or bleach to achieve great results. Make sure and let them know if you are only wanting a little bit of lightness to make sure they don't overdo it. It would also help to pick a shade you'd like your hair to turn out in a swatch book -- it may be that they have to lighten it to a blonde and then tint over it with the color you choose.
Reply:I heard both lemon juice and rosemary tea works, but is bad for your hair. Try catching some sun. It'll brighten your hair by a million shades. LOL! Maybe 5-7shades.
Reply:go out in the sun alot or put some foils in your hair
Reply:if you want fast results you can use hair bleach NOT house bleach and just rinse you hair.. that should bring it down alot
Reply:I know pretty good thing for lightening hair.

Buy yourself a lot of camomille tea. Before you wash your hair, make a pot of tea and leave it to chill. When you are out of the shower pour the chilled tea overyour hair. Will be nice if you can go out on the sun and leave your hair to dry naturally.

After a month you will see that your hair is lighter and shinier.
Reply:Lemon juice and rosemary tea work, but they are not worth it because they are so bad for your hair. My suggestion is the sun! It brightens my hair by like a million shades! Another obvious alternative would be dying it, but if you do, make sure to buy another box of dye with your color hair, just in case you don't like the way it turned out!
Reply:NO. PEROXIDE WORK WELL IF YOU WANT AN BRIGHTER HAIR COLOR.
Reply:They have something called Sun-In you can find in the shampoo isle.

What part of rosemary leaf has antibacterial properties?

the whole leaf is.

try to crush it and put it on the place you want to cleanse

or you can get the essential oil and use that.

What part of rosemary leaf has antibacterial properties?
What part of the leaf? Do you know what rosemary look like? It has short, piney--looking needles. Those are the leaves. The entire plant is medicinal. The entire leaf is medicinal, antibacterial, and antifungal. It has many other uses as well, including culinary, medicinal, use in massage and essential oils, etc. It is an excellent herb for circulation and memory, increased apprehension (in the sense of to apprehend, or to "get", ie, to learn) and use in lifting depression.

ROSEMARY COOKIES

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup shortening

1 1/2 cup sugar

2 eggs

2 3/4 cup flour

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 teaspoon soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 scant teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Blend together the butter, shortening, sugar and eggs until creamy.

Sift flour into the mixture then add the other dry ingredients; the cream of tartar, soda and salt, and blend together. Next add the most important ingredient at least when it comes to flavor, 2 scant teaspoons of fresh chopped rosemary.

Form the dough into small balls and place them on an ungreased baking sheet. Press the balls flat with the bottom of a drinking glass that has been dipped in sugar. This gives them a nice crunchy glaze.

Slide them into a pre-heated 400 degree oven for only about 8 minutes. It's a good idea to loosen the cookies as soon as you take them from the oven.

Should I transfer my rosemary to another pot?

Would it be a good time to re-pot my rosemary?

I bought a rosemary plant in early december. The container it came in has no drainage. Should I repot it now or wait until spring? It's an indoor plant but I give it outside sun a few hours a day. Which will be more harmful to the plant? Repotting or poor drainage? Also any extra tips on how to care for my plant will be much appreciated. :)

Should I transfer my rosemary to another pot?
Should I transfer my rosemary to another pot? . . . . ABSOLUTLY and the quicker you do that the better chance that your rosemary will live out the month.

What you have Rose in now is an UNholey container. THE WORST kind. This means no drainage. This means that the roots can not get air. This means no oxygen and rot sets in. This means that Rose will lose her roots and die.

Rose will do best in the strongest lighted place you have in your house. The strongest (direct sunlight) for the longest amount of time each day.

To kill a plant by transplanting one must destroy as many roots as possible. Of course even the greenest of thumbs has good sucess in transplanting.

An Unholey pot does the job of killing roots quite well. Poor drainage is right up there with Unholey. The bad guy is trapped water and submerged roots. Each irrigation adds more water and the water level creeps upward.

Rosemary is Rosmarinus officinalis. Rosmarinus from Latin means sea dew. Sea dew because Rose was discovered on the cliffs of southern France that over-look the Mediterainian sea. This is pretty much a dry situation and as such you only need to irrigate Rose when the potting medium is dry about one finger joint down. Avoid keeping Rose wet. She will hate you and show it by becoming ugly - rangy.

The Virgin Mary washed her sky blue cloke and hung it over a rosemary bush. Hence, rosemary flowers are sky blue and bring luck.

Rose is an herb. This is the rosemary of fine cooking. Her leaves are the essential, areomatic, flavoring spagitti lovers know.
Reply:Thanks so much for your advice! Darn I was too late to pick best answer so I voted for you. She is much happier now. :) Report It

Reply:The idiot who put a rosemary in a non draining pot should be shot! Avoid buying anything from this source again. Repotting will do it no harm at all, but rosemary definitely does not like wet feet. It really wants to be an outdoor plant too, it is a sunlover, but if your outdoor conditions do not suit, you can overwinter it indoors.

If you are only keeping it inside because you like the look, try getting a second one, and giving them turns inside and outside - say a month each.
Reply:Yes, repot. Never be afraid to repot an indoor plant if it is looking potbound or if it is in a bad container. If you want to be thrifty, however, you might try drilling a few holes in the bottom of the pot you already have.
Reply:Definitely repot it.

Rosemary is an herb that doesn't like an overabundance of water -- "wet feet" can kill a rosemary plant. As others have said, you don't have much to lose by repotting -- just handle the roots cautiously, perhaps spreading them out a bit, but don't tear at them.

The sun is a great thing for rosemary, potted or otherwise -- it's actually a tender evergreen perennial, native to the rocky Mediterannean coasts, and thrives on sun and, believe it or not, sandy and not particularly fertile soil. So, good drainage is essential.

Fertilize a bit when spring arrives, but don't fertilize now, and don't overdo it in any case.

Good luck!

What Steve said. They are also very good for helping you to relax, and for freshening rooms.

Does anyone know about the uses of rosemary oil and lavender oil?
they make good insect repelant's.
Reply:These are wonderful oils, the aroma appealing to almost everyone. Rosemary helps bring a shine to hair when added to shampoo, is said to sharpen memory, is invigorating and good to use when you feel a little down and need a lift. Lavendar, on the other hand, is relaxing, can help in the treatment of burns, sooths muscle aches and pains, and can help headaches and insomnia. It's also considered one of the safest oils. Rosemary is not recommended for pregnant women.
Reply:lavender oil is good for headaches. Put a dab on the forehead. It will help releive the pain.

What can you use essential oil rosemary for, is good for memory problems?

It doesn't really work that well. Try 'Higher Mind' if you're willing to take a chance. Other wise, check this website (www.glyconutrientsreference.com).

What can you use essential oil rosemary for, is good for memory problems?
There are a few different chemotypes of Rosemary. Rosemary is best used for general fatigue and infection because it stimulates the body and mind generally. This is an excellent oil to inhale in the morning because it sharpens the mind and clears the sleepy dullness.

www.eoils.net Report It

Reply:i use it all the time but i cant remember what for,!!
Reply:I have heard that this is true. Try rubbing a small amount of the oil on a cool lightbulb for the lamp on your desk or on your wrists. When you turn on the light it will slowly warm and send out the scent.

Beetles on the rosemary?

I have recently discovered a group of metalic beetles on the rosemary bush in my garden. They're about 1cm long and sit sround the ends of the stalks. has anyone seen this before? Will they harm the plant or are they a good thing?

Beetles on the rosemary?
A few spring to mind that are metallic -

Chrysolina americana - The Rosemary Leaf Beetle - probably not a coincidence, as this loves Rosemary (sometimes lavender, thyme and sage) plants. Metallic green, with purple strips, about 8mm long - not quite an inch.

Its larvae are destructive to rosemary foliage, though the adults, other than laying more eggs, are less of a threat.

http://www.rhs.org.uk/research/projects/...

Cetonia aurata – The Rose Chafer - roundish, usually eats flowers. As Rosemary plants are still flowering now, it may be eating some flowers. Usually metallic green, sometimes bronze/other colours. Its larvae eat decaying plant matter, old wood, plant matter etc, so aren't a problem. I see this in my garden from time to time, About 3/4 of an inch.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_chafer

Oedemera nobilis – thick-legged flower beetle. Again likes flowers, but is normally in wild areas.

http://www.plantpress.com/wildlife/o238-...

There is 1 endangered beetle, a (mostly) scarlet and metallic green, called Scarlet malachite beetle (Malachius aeneus). You may have this, and this would be damaging to disturb them, as there are now very few left. Only seen now in the south of England, usually in wild plant areas.

http://www.arkive.org/species/ARK/invert...

Could be the Majestic or other Ground Beetle, eg. Carabus violaceus which eat garden pests, such as slugs etc.

http://www.uksafari.com/violetgroundbeet...

Beatles sitting in the sun are probably warming themselves up, as they are cold blooded, and need the sun's wamth to get their energy 'going'..

I'll check back later, to see if you've added anything more on them. Eg, colour, shape etc. You may have idintified it from the photos in the links I've added in this answer.

Good luck! Rob

How much will one rosemary plant yeild?????
Hey Cole,

After 1 year, my Rosemary Prostratus plants weigh about .5 lbs each. I have 8 plants and get way more then my entire neighborhood can uses.
Reply:The yield varies between Rosemary cultivars. Numerous cultivars have been selected for garden use. The following are frequently sold:

Albus — white flowers

Arp — leaves light green, lemon-scented

Aureus — leaves speckled yellow

Benenden Blue — leaves narrow, dark green

Blue Boy — dwarf, small leaves

Golden Rain — leaves green, with yellow streaks

Irene — lax, trailing

Lockwood de Forest — procumbent selection from Tuscan Blue

Ken Taylor — shrubby

Majorica Pink — pink flowers

Miss Jessop's Upright — tall, erect

Pinkie — pink flowers

Prostratus

Pyramidalis (a.k.a Erectus) — pale blue flowers

Roseus — pink flowers

Salem — pale blue flowers, cold hardy similar to Arp

Severn Sea — spreading, low-growing, with arching branches; flowers deep violet

Tuscan Blue — upright

I hope it helps.
Reply:one rosemary plant will be enought for persoanl use since it is so strong, depending on how much you use. it is not as prolific as mint...hold on to your hat. I grow mint every year and had to move it to a pot, out of my garden. It will go crazy and sprout up all over..very invasive...so keep that in mind. Oregano will do fine, but would plant a few plants if you want to have enough for home use...not as fast growing. Not much experience w/the others.

Can I use rosemary oil on my hair and scalp for a massage, or does it HAVE to be diluted w/ a carrier oil?

Im trying to stimulate my hair growth rate and heard that rosemary oil is an excellent way of doing this. however, i am unsure if applying it straight from the bottle to my scalp is the best way to go, or if i should combine it with a carrier oil such as jojoba which i hear has excellent moisturizing elements. my hair is dry and thick and I would like to know if this mixture of the two oils will help at all. Also, i am absloutely stumped as to how much rosemary oil to use per teaspoon of jojoba or if should use any at all. If anyone lives in the Dallas area and knows a reputable manufacturer where i can purchase High-Quality, pure oils, I'd really appreciate the feedback.

Can I use rosemary oil on my hair and scalp for a massage, or does it HAVE to be diluted w/ a carrier oil?
You can also mix it with a conditioner %26amp; let it sit on your hair for about 15min %26amp; then rinse out.

I've also heard that peppermint oil is good for stimulating the scalp.

Reply:Yes, you should use rosemary essential oil mixed with a carrier oil. Jojoba oil is an excellent choice. Jojoba oil is very light weight and very moisturizing for your scalp, skin and hair.

I buy jojoba oil and essential oils at my local whole foods store. They usually have a good selection and decent prices.

Is it okay to eat rosemary when pregnant? In moderation?

I have heard somewhere that rosemary isn't a good herb during pregnancy that it could loosen the uterus or something but only if in excess. Does any1 know anything about this and did you/have you eaten at least some rosemary while pregnant? I am 23 weeks and ate some chicken that had rosemary in it not a whole lot just some. and I hardly ever eat rosemary. Is this okay or safe?

Is it okay to eat rosemary when pregnant? In moderation?
I am pretty sure its rosemary leaf a herb found in different herbal tablets you can get from your health food store that is the problem during the early stages of pregnancy. It can cause contractions in the uterus they don't recommend using it in the first 2 trimesters. If your worried you should give your doctor a call they should be able to answer a question like that over the phone.
Reply:Foods seasoned with rosemary are not a problem. Taking large amounts of the herb is not advised during pregnancy. Don't worry, chicken flavored with rosemary is not going to harm your baby. Everything in moderation is the key
Reply:hope so, i did :) I would have the rosemary chicken at my favorite place at least 1 a week..my baby is a healthy 5 months old :)
Reply:Culinary amounts of herbs are just fine and not a problem. However it is large amounts or tea made from herbs taken regularly that can be a problem. Go for it! Chicken soup with rosemary is awesome.

Reply:Nope, they are not poisinous because we commenly eat them. Sassafrass bark can be poisinous, though.

This website will give you information on all the herbs. Many herbs can be safe if used appropriately. For example sassafras roots boiled for tea may be healthy but the concentrated oil may have a toxic effect. I don't know of any toxic effects of rosemary or mint but you should do your research on how you plan to eat them.
Reply:I know mint or roemary is safe people cook with it never heard of the other
Reply:No. Mint, Rosemary, and Sassafrass are not poisoness. In fact, they are all edible. Mints and rosemary are used for delicious recipes and sassafrass can be used to make candy. You can read more about some of these herbs at http://www.bluelabelherbs.com. They have some great information on herbs and if you have questions you can ask their growers in their forum.

Reply:We eat them all the time. No need for a web site. Think spaghetti sauce, mint juleps and root beer or sarsparilla.
Reply:rosemary is a delicious herb to flavor just about any kind of meat, from beef to pork. Mint is used as a flavoring in TONS of stuff.

These sure aren't poisionous. I don't think they would sell Mint leaves and rosemary in the produce section of grocery stores if it was poisonous!!!!

Sassafrass? Probably not since it is used to make delicious drinks at country fairs and such :)
Reply:i'm going to say no since they are common spices that are often used in cooking.
Reply:no they asre in a lot of foods!!!
Reply:No, never heard of Sassafrass though
Reply:http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consu... sassafrass bark is poisonous

Rosemary - what to do with the flowers???

I have grown some Rosemary for cooking. The plant has little blue/lavender coloured flowers all over it. I wanted to freeze the Rosemary but do I have to pick off all the flowers or are they edible? do they taste ok? will they be ok to freeze???

Rosemary - what to do with the flowers???
They've gone to seed when they flower, and the taste becomes somewhat bitter and more pungent. You don't need to freeze it. I just hang it in bunches in the garage to dry and then pinch off what I need from time to time. It's best to harvest rosemary before it flowers.
Reply:Do not freeze them dry them in a paper bag in a warm cupboard. I normally wait until all the flowers are gone before I do mine.
Reply:They are not okay to freeze. They are okay to dry in a warm place and, yes, they are edible.

What are the health benefits of essiac tea and rosemary tea?

Most people take essiac tea (in an aggressive dose) as an alternative (complementary or supplementary) treatment to conventional cancer treatment. Some take it because they have studied the available information on essiac, and believe it reduces the side effects of chemotherapy or radiation. The decision on whether to combine essiac use with traditional treatments is up to each individual. There is no evidence that essiac interferes with other pharmaceutical or natural treatments. In many cases, essiac seems to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and can complement other natural remedies. Please inform your health care provider if you decide to use essiac (or anything else) as a supplemental treatment.

Some people mainly take essiac (in a maintenance dose) as a daily supplement to promote general overall well-being, or as a preventive measure against many forms of disease, possibly due to its immune system-enhancing properties.

Many people give essiac to their pets, believing it reduces the agony of arthritis and extends the life (and/or improves the quality of life) of pets with terminal cancer and other ailments.

What are some of the reported benefits of essiac tea?

1. Prevents the buildup of excess fatty deposits in artery walls, heart, kidney and liver.

2. Regulates cholesterol levels by transforming sugar and fat into energy.

3. Destroys parasites in the digestive system and throughout the body.

4. Helps counteract the effects of aluminum, lead and mercury poisoning.

5. Strengthens and tightens muscles, organs and tissues.

6. Makes bones, joints, ligaments, lungs, and membranes strong and flexible, consequently less vulnerable to stress or stress injuries.

7. Nourishes and stimulates the brain and nervous system.

8. Promotes the absorption of fluids in the tissues.

9. Removes toxic accumulations in the fat, lymph, bone marrow, bladder, and alimentary canals.

10. Neutralizes acids, absorbs toxins in the bowel, and eliminates both.

More reported benefits of essiac tea:

11. Clears the respiratory channels by dissolving and expelling mucus.

12. Relieves the liver of its burden of detoxification by converting fatty toxins into water-soluble substances that can then be easily eliminated through the kidneys.

13. Assists the liver to produce lecithin, which forms part of the myelin sheath, a white fatty material that encloses nerve fibers.

14. Reduces, perhaps eliminates, heavy metal deposits in tissues (especially those surrounding the joints) to reduce inflammation and stiffness.

15. Improves the functions of the pancreas and spleen by increasing the effectiveness of insulin.

16. Purifies the blood.

17. Increases red cell production, and keeps the cells from rupturing.

18. Increases the body's ability to utilize oxygen by raising the oxygen level in the tissue cells.

19. Maintains the balance between potassium and sodium within the body so that the fluid inside and outside each cell is regulated: in this way, cells are nourished with nutrients and are also cleansed.

20. Converts calcium and potassium oxalates into a harmless form by making them solvent in the urine. Regulates the amount of oxalic acid delivered to the kidneys, reducing the risk of stone formation in the gall bladder, kidneys, and/or urinary tract.

And there are even more benefits of essiac tea, according to The Essiac Handbook:

21. Protects against toxins entering the brain.

22. Protects the body against radiation and X-rays.

23. Relieves pain, increases the appetite, and provides more energy along with a sense of well-being.

24. Speeds up wound healing by helping to regenerate the damaged area.

25. Increases the production of antibodies like lymphocytes and T-cells in the thymus gland, which is the defender of our immune system.

26. Inhibits (and possibly destroys) benign growths and tumors.

27. Protects the cells against free radicals.

28. Decreases sugar cravings due to better blood sugar control.

Sorry, but I don't know anything about rosemary tea.

What are the health benefits of essiac tea and rosemary tea?
I knew a lady who took essiac tea regularly every day for cancer. She died...and it tastes kinda nasty too...and expensive

Essiac is the name of a lady in canada (spelled backwards, so her name was Caisse) and she cured herself of an incurable ailment with this mixture of American Indian medical herbs that she got from a shaman I believe...I think there is slippery elm in it and it tastes kind of like slick...kind of licoricey..???. I tasted it once and that was enough for me..here is a link to the website for it

Reply:.
Reply:It cleans the dirt from underneath my fingernails.
Reply:rosemary tea- stomach cramps
Reply:All weird teas are only beneficial to the promoters.

Essiac spelled backwards may be a woman's name (is it?), but I know that in French it means "Cash Register".
Reply:Longer life.
Reply:I have no idea what is essiac tea, is there another name for it?

for rosemary....

Rosemary Tea increases circulation and slightly raises the blood pressure warming the body from the inside out. Internally Rosemary Tea stimulates the liver and digestion, promotes blood circulation, tones up the blood vessels, invigorates, and increases your awareness. Use Rosemary Tea as a mouthwash for bad breath.

Cooking- Every hear of putting dried rosemary into the water before boiling rice?

Never heard of it but you can top it on top of the rice when finished for a nice little touch.

Cooking- Every hear of putting dried rosemary into the water before boiling rice?
It sounds lovely.
Reply:I usually use saffron, but I suppose rosemary would do the same thing, add a little flavor to the water and through it to the rice. Give it a try, let me know how it goes.
